Introduction for 8736

Hello, my name is Carrie, mostly called Mac, occasionally called Twinks! I'm 37, working on my 12th year as an EMT in the 911 services. I love being in the healthcare field, and have decided to leave the prehospital setting, and gravitate towards the hospital setting. My ultimate goal is Radiology Tech, but I'm thinking about how well I know myself, so I'll probably change my mind a dozen times.
I'm an Army brat from Tennessee, and despite a short stint in Virginia, I've been in California most of my life. I talk like a Californian, but get me around a Southerner, and my accent will drip like warm maple syrup!
I was a terrible student growing up, with no interest in education, as my main focus in life was survival, and I never developed the ability to concentrate for too long on subjects that bored me. As a young adult, I decided my life of short lived jobs was ridiculous, and took the easiest course at the JC that I could find...EMT. And found my calling.
This class is a pre-req to a pre-req for the Rad Tech program, but I do like to write, and am hoping this class can get the words in my head to flow on paper.
I'm looking forward to interacting with everyone here, and I wish you all a Happy New Year!

  1. Hello Carrie,
I am also looking at going into the medical field. I am currently studying to get my AA degree in Pharmacy Technician. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a school in this area that has a program for what I actually want to do, which is Ultrasound Technology. I was a lot like you as a student when growing up. I was never very focused. Some how I managed to keep my grades up despite turning in a lot of homework late. I have gotten much better as a young adult. I would have to say that right now I am motivated more than I have ever been to complete my schooling. Maybe it is because I actually know what I want to do now. I have changed my major so many times. I think that it also has to do with my new baby and wanting to be able to make good income and get us into a bigger apartment. Good luck with your classes!

  2. Hello Carrie,
I also am interested in the medical field. I'm currently trying to work hard to get into the Dental Hygienist Program. We have a lot in common, when I was growing up in high school, I didn't take things seriously. Education didn't have me thinking! Now I know how important it is, and that's the reason why I Strive for the best. I want to go out with a career that is worth it, all my schoolwork has to be paid off. I know what I have to do to get what I want, but hard work has to happen. I glad to hear you and me are the same in Education. I hope to get to know you better! Good Luck with school!

  3. Hi Carrie,

I am interested in the medical field as well. It sounds like there are a few people signed up and working towards a career in the medical field. I am working towards a career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. The Radiology Technician sounds interesting as well. It sounds like you have a lot of schooling and experience behind you. I am taking this class as a prereq into the program as well. We will all be working very close together in this class and look forward to hearing from you soon. Good luck with your future career as a Radiology Technician. Talk to you soon.

  4. (: Hi Carrie,

Thank you for your comments on my blog. My sister in law actually graduated from the Rad Tech program at the JC the same year I did for Dental Asst. She is now at Kaiser, and enjoys her job. I think that if you push yourself to do it, you probably will be surprised with the outcome of it all. Take a chance.

Southern accents are so funny, but I love to listen to it. I remember when I lived in Georgia for a year, I could not understand it. Now it all just seems normal to me.

You and I both, I don't like to write either. It just feels as if whatever point I would like to get across, doesn't sound right on paper.

  5. I laughed when I read that you said you were a bad student because I totally am. Everyday is a challenge to do homework and go to class. Im glad that you found a good job and you enjoy doing it. Thats awesome !

  6. Carrie,
As an RDA I do hear a lot of complaints. However, being a RDA for an orthodontist is much different than to a general dentist. But I understand what you are saying. RDA's that deal with braces, mainly have to listen to teenagers that do not brush or floss their teeth before their appt. For me, I have a variety. If that makes any sense.

  7. Hi Carrie,

I love your willingness to change jobs. I know a lot of people who stick with their jobs just because it pays the bills. What's changed your mind about being an EMT?

Liking to write and wanting to express one's ideas are the necessary prerequisites to becoming a good writing. All it takes are persistence and practice. Wrestling ideas into an essay is no easy feat.

I'm looking forward to working with you this semester.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  9. Hi Carrie,
I am too called Mac, not by choice. I sort of allowed my boss to call me it one time because of my maiden name and my dad worked in a different department. Anyways she thought it was funny to call me lil' mac and him Big Mac and it kind a stuck. It's easy when sign things I can use that instead of my name.
I’m envious of what you do. I am an Administration Justice Major and I have always been interested in the EMT field, just never sure if I would be able to cut it in the medical field. Good luck to you and hope to future corresponding to you throughout the semester.

  10. Hi Carrie,

Thanks for your comments on my blog. We are actually similiar in age and still in school. I like to think, better late than never :) It's funny how one day it hits you in which way you decide to take your career path. It has happened to me twice.

English has to be the hardest subject for me, so I'm right there with you when you say you are not a good student. Well, good luck to both of us.

I look forward to working with you.
